Veterinary hospitals are rarely designed in
Portugal. The Owner, a true visionary, came to the United States to find an
Architect who could help transform his goals into cutting-edge
reality. rfa was retained as a Consultant on the design of this facility,
Portugal's first state-of-the-art veterinary hospital. The
Architect of Record was Ulrik Fabricius, a Danish architect
working in Porto, Portugal. The building occupies the entire site.
The front of the building faces a busy urban street.
A large, colorful exterior mural, painted on the wall alongside
the front entrance, helps to identify the hospital and catch
the attention of people passing by. The hospital is divided
into three functional zones: an outpatient zone, an inpatient
zone, and a staff zone. The outpatient zone consists of the
reception/waiting area and the exam/consultation rooms.
The inpatient zone contains the treatment, surgical and
boarding areas. The staff zone includes the doctors'
offices, conference room and staff lounge on an upper
level at the rear of the hospital.
